Setting the foundations of the garden in 2020-21
Croxton Community Garden Inc. took over the lease of a disused space at 30-40 Spencer Street, Northcote, from VicTrack in 2020. It was a wasted space, sad and decrepit. Since then, the volunteer members have committed time, energy and gardening nous via monthly working bees and regular meetups, to transform this space into the burgeoning, blooming community garden it is today.
The community started with the help of local permaculture horticulturalists Very Edible Gardens (VEG) to guide the overall plans and construction of planting boxes. The garden has been expanding slowly but steadily since, relying on grants, fundraising and the incredible energy of our members to keep the garden growing.
Over the years the garden executive has successfully applied for grants from Darebin Council, VicTrack, Lyons Club Northcote, and Australia Post. This allowed us to expand the number of wicking beds, plant a fruit and native orchard, and run workshops for members.
At Marra Guwiyap Garden, there are no private plots. This is a community garden in its truest sense. This means that, no matter how full the space gets of fresh, organic fruit and veg, we can remain open to new members.
We value social interactions and shared learning. And having a good time getting our hands dirty!
